Sisters Inside Conference

Mar 17 2017 12:48 PM

Late last year several women attended the Sisters Inside Conference in Brisbane.

Late last year for the first time, several papers were presented at the Sisters Inside Conference in Brisbane.  Seeds women (who organised and raised funds through a special quiz night) and Board members (who paid their own way) attended the conference which explored contemporary issues such as the effectiveness of prison programs; age in sentencing and the continued over-representation of Aboriginal women in custody.

We were delighted to have the opportunity to present our work on:

  • Every Woman AND CHILD:  Collaborating for children of criminalised women (Andrea Duff and Linda Fisk, Seeds of Affinity, SA)
  • “What I know now”: Radio as a means of empowerment for women with lived prison experience (Dr Charlotte Bedford, University of Adelaide & Seeds of Affinity, SA)
  • Getting to Know Ex-prisoners through their Photography: Educating the public, challenging stereotypes (Michele Jarldorn, Flinders University & Seeds of Affinity, SA)

Like all conferences, this presented a range of diverse views on issues facing women, society and the question of the prison system. It raised the question of the effectiveness of prison in reducing crime and providing meaningful and constructive experiences for women to move forward productively with their lives.

Most importantly, the conference gave our women the opportunity to share their experiences and contribute to the conversations around their prison experience. Read A letter to the Sisters Inside.

The Seeds women would like to thank all of their friends, family and supporters for attending the quiz night which funded airfares and accommodation (registration for women with lived prison experience was free).

Thank you for the beautiful gift baskets which the women involved in the Seeds of Affinity project have been making. We used them as presentation gifts at our United Against Domestic Violence Conference and they were greatly appreciated. This is the third time that we have used these products and the quality and presentation are always remarked upon. - Diana Lockwood, Chair, Soroptimist International Torrens
